Use the following scenario from The IRIS Center to complete the tasks below:

Jacob is an active boy in the 4th grade who enjoys coming to school and participates in sports after school. Jacob does well in most classes but has difficulty with new vocabulary words. This difficulty with new vocabulary is not only seen during reading class but also during content area classes such as science and social studies. Jacob’s mother indicated that he has always had difficulty understanding new vocabulary but that it has not affected his comprehension until this year. Jacob is willing to adopt new strategies that will assist him in learning and remembering new vocabulary words and to help him better understand the story as a whole. Jacob and his teacher developed the following goal for him:

Given vocabulary words, Jacob will define and use each in a sentence.
Paulsen, K., & the IRIS Center.(2004).Comprehension & vocabulary: Grades 3–5.

Research three strategies regarding vocabulary instruction that will assist Jacob in reaching his goal.

In 250-500 words, identify and explain how each strategy could assist Jacob in reaching his goal.  In addition, discuss how you would involve Jacob’s parents, and develop an activity from one of these three strategies that Jacob’s parents can use at home.

Include three sources from your research in your essay to support your position.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required

Questions We Can Help You To Answer

Paper Instructions:

In our post-modern age, when people often confuse science with technology, we often forget that at its ancient origins, science was closely allied with philosophy--was even called "natural philosophy." It is important to remember these origins to understand that science is the search for truth--not the quest for a better mousetrap (or mousepad). As scientific endeavors become more arcane and their results more obscure, it remains important for the non-specialist to keep abreast of developments in those complex fields. Remember that scientists get much of their finding from the government, and we should know what we are paying for. Moreover, scientific research often impinges on questions of ethics and even morality, and we must be educated enough to make informed decisions about these projects.

As scientific fields become more specialized, the popular-science interface becomes even more important. Not even those with doctorates in physics can be experts in astrophysics, biological physics, low-energy atomic-collision physics, relativistic heavy ion physics, particle physics, laser physics, and condensed matter physics. How could it then be possible for a biologist or a literature major--or a plumber--to understand the intricacies of those fields? Clearly, we NEED popular science writers--those who understand the complexities of scientific disciplines and can simplify them for the general reader while still conveying the important content.

Popular science writing requires an understanding of the scientific field and the ability to write clear, readable prose that is accessible to the members of the educated general public. This assignment is designed to provide an introduction to popular science writing.

As you learned in English 111, every research project begins with a research question and a tentative thesis. For this project, your question will be one about your chosen topic as it relates to the natural sciences. (See some of the examples I gave in the first paragraph of "Content and Resources.") Having come up with a question, you will search the library's databases for related articles. When you have found and skimmed at least three promising articles, you will come up with a tentative thesis that answers that question. It is always important to begin with a tentative thesis so to guide your research, note-taking, and synthesizing of the material. (If you need a review of these concepts, they are covered in Chapter 50 of the English 111 text, The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Readings and Handbook, as well as in other resources on research writing.) Your research question and tentative thesis are due on 6/8.

The next step will be to research further to make sure you have three scholarly sources that will provide a thorough answer to your research question and prepare a list of Cited References for the three articles. Next, you will take careful notes on your three sources, making sure the information you are collecting helps you answer the question you have asked. Although most notes should be taken in your own words, remember to use quotation marks when you copy material directly from a source. (NOTE: CSE style discourages the use of direct quotes; likewise, since the aim of popular science writing is general accessibility, direct quotes are also discouraged from that vantage point.)  ALWAYS note the page number where you found our information whether you have noted it in your own words or in a direct quote. Based on your notes, you will turn in summaries of your three sources on 6/10, each of which begins with a CSE-formatted reference.

The summaries should provide all the information you need for the final paper, which will answer your research question in a manner accessible to the general public. All papers in this course will require an outline (due 6/12 for this assignment), a partial rough draft (due on 6/14), and a final draft, which will be submitted on SafeAssign (due 6/18). The final paper should be about 900-1,100 words, and sources will be cited with CSE citation-sequence style.

All assignments will be submitted on Blackboard via the links below. You may simply submit the five preliminary assignments directly on Blackboard via the links found later in the module. However, the final paper will be submitted as a Word document in CSE formatting as found in Hacker and Fister.

Some Important Pointers

When you find your articles, taking thorough notes on them is the most efficient way of ensuring that you never have to search for them again. Several students have found that the library site is temperamental and doesn't always provide them the instant help they need when doing a search at 11:59 p.m.
The library and the computer labs allow you to print your sources if you insist on having ongoing access to them.
If you find it impossible to use the FTCC website, the alternative is NCLive.org. When searching NCLive, you will be asked to locate your school and to enter a password, which is garpcham.

Analysis of Costs, Risks, and Benefits

What do you think is the greater good: that you have the freedom to choose whether or not to be treated for an infectious disease, or that you are compelled by law to do so, to protect others in the community? As a public health professional making this same decision, how much of a danger to others would there need to be before you think such a legal intervention is justified? What kinds of scientific and other evidence would you draw on to make such a decision?

Public health officials are often faced with having to decide whether the trade-offs of protecting the public’s health outweigh the loss of individual interests or rights. Review "Table 2: Public health regulation: Trade-offs between public benefit and private interests and rights" on pages 44–46 in the textbook. Bring to mind instances of regulations in which these trade-offs figured prominently.
Then, focusing on any of the key concepts in the first four categories of Surveillance, Case Finding, Medical Interventions, or Personal Control Measures, apply the concept to HIV/AIDS or another major public health threat. For example, under the Surveillance category, discuss the costs, risks, and benefits of preserving physical-patient confidentiality in HIV cases.

Be sure to cite evidence, including scientific (biological or molecular) studies, to support your views.

Post by Day 4 your response to the following: (Reminder: You must address all of the Discussion points in one initial posting.)
Discuss the risks, costs, and benefits of addressing HIV or another serious public health issue in the area of Surveillance, Case Finding, Medical Interventions, or Personal Control Measures.

What do you think is the right approach to the health problem? What scientific evidence (biological and molecular) can you cite for your position?

Explore the ethical considerations associated with this issue for populations’ and individuals’ rights.

Instructions:
•    Identify one disease, disorder or health condition that is prevalent among school-age youth.

Each person will select a topic from the following list:
Obesity

APA Referencing Resources:
*American Psychological Association (2001). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed). Washington, DC: author.

*Online/Free: http://www.apastyle.org/elecref.html
          http://www.docstyles.com/apacrib.html
    http://ww38.purdueowl.com/

Written Report Evaluation Criteria:
•    Each student will prepare a written report.
•    Typed, font size 12, 5-7 pages (not including references).
•    Please see attached rubric for written reports for more detail on how the report will be graded.

The report should be professional, useful, and include the following:

Points:

          A. Student name

          B. NAME of Disease: Identify name, common and medical terms used.

          C. Description: State a description of the disease/disorder/health condition.
o    What is the causative agent? (name of pathogen for infectious diseases, risk factor/behavior for chronic diseases).
o    What are the signs?  (objective indicator(s), measurable, visible signs of illness such as rash, fever, bleeding, behavior for infectious diseases; smoking, overeating, not exercising for chronic diseases such as obesity).
o    What are the symptoms (subjective indicators of illness usually difficult to measure such as pain, fatigue, weakness, restlessness).
o    If you have chosen an infectious disease:
•    Incubation period of disease? (time between pathogen entering system/body and the appearance of signs/symptoms).
•    Communicable/Contagious period? (time period in which the disease can be spread from one person to another).
o    If you have chosen a chronic disease (noninfectious):
•    length of time between risk factors being present to presence of disease (for example in the case of obesity usually risk factors such as overeating and inactivity are present for 5-10 years before the person is considered obese).
•    Can this disease be considered “contagious” in terms of influence (peers, family, friends, lifestyle, cultural/religious practices)? For example the foods we eat are dependent in part to who we eat them with (family) and what we eat based on culture and preferred tastes. Do these patterns affect whether we become obese as a society?

    D. Prevalence: List the prevalence rate (total number of existing cases of the disease within a given time period), whether this has increased, decreased, or not changed over time.

    E. Transmission/Prevention/Treatment: Identify the following:
o    Mode(s) of transmission (how is the disease spread from person to person). Again if you have chosen a chronic disease like obesity, you can talk about the odds of children becoming obese if they have obese parents.
o    Methods of Prevention
o    Treatment

F. Community Impact: What is being done at the federal, state, and community level to prevent and treat this disease. Any community, school, research programs in place?

    G. Implications for the Educator/Teacher: Describe the implications for the teacher.
o    What types of actions/adjustments will a teacher in the school setting need to make for a child with the disease/disorder/health condition?
o    Prevention: How to prevent the disease from spreading (ex. immunizations). Again with chronic disease like obesity you can talk about healthy lunches in schools, parental education, etc.
o    Implementation: What types of instructional strategies can be used to teach a child/student(s) with this disease/health condition?
o    Classroom Environment: What modifications might be required?
o    Adaptations of the curriculum. What types of curriculum changes will the teacher make for a student(s) with this disease/health condition?

    H. Resources: Identify at least 2 different resources where a teacher, parent, individual can go for additional information about the health condition. Include local address, phone number, internet address. Prefer local resources, however, can use state and national agencies.

    I. References:  Cite all references used to research this topic (1 page max). List a minimum of 5 different references (textbook is an acceptable source). Use APA format OR other okay. As long as you are consistent in referencing. NOTE: If no references, “0” aka no points for the entire paper.

Public Health Policies Paper

Creating new policies is one of the most effective means by which public health can accomplish its goal of promoting and protecting the health of communities. Consider the lives that have been saved, and the human suffering and resources that have been spared, through policies such as mandatory seat belt use or restrictions on the advertisement and sale of tobacco.

When pursuing any public health aim, however, public health professionals need to be aware of the scope of their legal powers and duties. These legal powers depend on the kind of organization at which they work.

In this Application Assignment, you are required to write a 3- to 5-page paper in which you propose three new policies for preventing or mitigating a significant public health problem, such as injuries, obesity, or bioterrorism. For this assignment, assume you work for your state health department, and make sure the policies you propose are in line with public health powers and duties.

Begin by selecting a significant public health problem and reading at least three research articles on your selected health problem. Then, create three new policies that could be effective in preventing and/or mitigating the identified problem. You may propose policies that are similar to existing ones, but your policies should demonstrate original thinking around, and new solutions to, the public health problems.

In a 3- to 5-page paper:

Begin by summarizing the legal and ethical basis for public health and health services. In other words, what grounds would you have in proposing any new policies? What would be the limits of your powers to do so?
Identify a significant public health issue and propose three new policies to address this issue. Explain how each policy would lead to positive change.
In addition, address the following questions in your paper:

What is an ethical policy? Explain whether the policies you have created are ethical.
What are the legal and ethical concerns that need to be addressed when implementing the policies?
Your paper must provide APA-formatted references for all resources you used and adhere to APA style and format.
